‘give a girl the right shoes and she can CONQUER the world’
Or At Least The Gym Floor…
since being back on the gym floor one of the biggest things I am asking my clients to do is take their shoes off when training especially legs, now we know this isn’t necessarily ideal and looking at some gym floors I think I would catch some kinda bug or infection but the shoes you wear on your feet make a massive difference especially when it comes to training legs, but also upper. Think about it, where to you start your balance from? your feet you ground through the feet, brace the glutes, brace the core and then you lift. if I asked you to perform a lift standing on your bed do you think you could lift the same? defiantly not as you wouldn’t be able to balance, same as when you lift in running shoes or crocs its like lifting with a mattress on your feet you cant grind into it therefore you are a. lifting less weight than what you are capable of b. not engaging the targeted muscle as well and c. putting yourself at more risk of injury.
so what should you wear on your feet? like posing heels the right style shoe for you will be different but some key things to look for are -
A flat base with a fairly thin but sturdy sole.
A wide enough shoe to spread your toes over a greater surface area
I mean you could for some exercises just go in your socks but on things like a leg press you could slip so thats also not ideal, brands that do work well are nike metcons, no bulls, vibrams, and even a pair of vans. there will be loads more just look for that flat solid base no pillows here please!
in bodybuilding we are constantly looking for that 1% extra and I think that starts from the feet up, we often apply this in our posing heels and ladies who have had the wrong pair of and moved to a more comfortable heel I know can vouch for me here, the shape of the heel changes the way you distribute weight, twist, spin and balance making it much harder or easier dependant on the shoe do should that not also come into account with training shoes?
Just some food for thought,
What are you currently lifting in?
